In the summer of 2017, after I finished a season of conservation tree planting in Vermont, I spent six weeks hiking the high peaks of New York. To access many of these mountains, I parked at the Adirondack Loj and hiked in past Marcy Dam, a wooden dam constructed by the CCC. Surrounding Marcy Brook are Whales Tail Mountain, Wright Peak, Algonquin Peak, Avalanche Mountain, Mount Colden, TR Mountain, and Phelps Mountain. The Dam is the perfect spot for a morning snack.

In “Marcy Dam” (24″x18″, 2018), I wanted to capture this iconic Adirondack Park landmark. In the background, the surrounding peaks rise from the horizon, below a blue sky of puffy white clouds. A mix of evergreen and deciduous trees border the clearing, which is bisected by Marcy Brook. In the foreground, pine trees tower overhead, shadowing the brook, where the sky is reflected in the surface of the water.
