Saguaros at Twilight

“Saguaros at Twilight” (60″x34″, 2022) is based on a series of photos from my 2019 Arizona Trail hike. Looking for a place to make camp after a long day of hiking, I was struck by the unmistakable silhouettes of ridge-top cacti standing in sharp contrast to the gradient of colors at sunset. With heavy clouds racing by overhead and desert flora lit by the last light of the day, the scene was imprinted upon my memory and stands out as one of my favorite evenings in the backcountry. My largest felting to date, “Saguaros at Twilight” evokes not only the vastness of the high desert but also the solitude and tranquility one might feel when in the wild lands alone.
