Overmountain Shelter

“Overmountain Shelter” is a felted rendering of an unusual Appalachian Trail shelter on Overmountain, a grassy peak in southern Virginia. In the Revolutionary War, the barn served as a rendezvous point for soldiers; now, it provides a place for weary hikers to come in out of the storm, as I did in 2012. I was grateful for a refuge from the thunderstorm and for the good company and guitar playing I found under its roof.

In “Overmountain Shelter,” a trail lined with twisting sumac leads to the two-story barn near a grove of mature trees. The shelter’s open doors and stepladder greet hikers. An American flag hangs across a tarp in a window.

Finished with care, this signed, one-of-a-kind 24”x16” wool landscape has been professionally framed in a textured frame.
